Design

Miles Hammond has been designing sporting equipment for the past 10 years for some of the best names in the industry and has over 35 international awards for his product design.  Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, he grew to love the ocean at an early age, learning to windsurf, sail, and water ski.  From riding the first unidirectional wake boards to learning to Kite-board in 2003, he has continued to enjoy spending time ripping on the water.

Over the past 8 years, he has been working with Corran Addison to design and develop some of the most cutting edge stand up paddle board designs in the industry.  In 2012, he launched Hammond boards.  Designed specifically for the Canadian market, the Hammond boards stand out from the rest.  .

Corran Addison has a long history as a whitewater kayaker who competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and was a three-time world championship medalist. He held the record for waterfall jumping for over a decade. He is also known industry-wide and internationally as the father of modern kayak design, paying particular attention to high performance designs that completely revolutionized both the industry, and the way kayaks were paddled. Over the last 8 years he has been designing and building stand up paddling boards that are truly ground breaking. His first surfing shape was just over 7′  long – this at a time when all SUP’s were close to 10′ – and he was one of the first to create displacement racing designs, which today are hailed as some of the fastest on the market

 

 

Construction

All hardboards start as blocks of EPS foam before they are CNC cut to the correct shapes. Our raceboards use 1lb EPS foam to keep overall weight at a minimum while the rest of our hardboards are built using 1.5lb foam. Once the EPS foam core has been shaped,  the durable outer shell is layed up. The first layer is comprised of hand layed 6oz fiberglass and resin. This serves as a strong base layer on which the rest of the construction is built on. Following the base layup, the board is then reinforced with a layer of 5mm carbonized bamboo for it’s natural rigidity, superior resistance to compression and higher energy absorption compared to 0ther materials. The final layer of 4oz fiberglass seals the entire matrix into one rigid body on which the decals and EVA pad can be added to.

Inflatable Layup

The Inflatable boards are constructed using layers of heavy duty PVC,rubber materials, several layers of urethane, and UV protection, to create a durable shell around the drop stitch core.  The drop stitch core is made of polyester threads which are strong enough to allow the board to withstand more pressure and subsequently increase rigidity. This technology allows for an extremely stiff board while retaining the same weight and paddling characteristics as normal hardboards. Inflatable boards are perfect for compact storage in apartments or the weekend trip to the cottage.
